They didn't put several species on the list. The are actually listed at the top of that link. They were all nixed either based on being CITES App 1, IUCN Redlisted as endangered or endangered in the USA. Either way we are working with IFW still to get the permit system working better so that you will be able to get them.

Bob.

Bob, do you have a list of all the animals that were declined. im curious as to why some of the genii of dart frogs were not added. O. pumilio for example are not endangered and are legally imported to the states every year. it was explained to me by Mac that sp like these are considered by IFW to be dendrobates and not oophaga. if we are going by the old taxa and are grouping in the oophaga genus with dendrobates, then IFW is saying O. lehamanni are legal in maine? O. lehamanni being a sp. that does not breed readily in captivity and is critically endangered and endemic to Colombia a country that hasn't allowed legal exportation of "dendrobates" since 1985.

As stated above, IFW has the animals that they denied on this link http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/speci ... pecies.htm. They are listed as follows off their site: "Many species have already been considered and rejected. Most recently, these include: Woma (python) [Aspedites ramsayi], Dumeril’s Boa [Acrantophis dumerili], Madagascar Tree Boa, Boa Mandrita [Sanzinia madagascariensis], Madagascar (Malagasy) Ground Boa [Acrantophis madagasascariensis], Texas Indigo Snake [Drymarchon melanurus], Eastern Indigo Snake [Drymarchon corias coupen], Reeve’s Turtle [Chinemys (Mauremys) reevesii], and Tomato Frogs [Diyscophus antongilli]."

The only darts that were denied, were denied because they are IUCN rated (check it out here http://www.iucnredlist.org) as endangered.

As far as taxa goes, CITES actually doesnt recognice the oophaga as the official name, it is merely a synonym for the species. They are currently accepting the dendrobates as the official genius name. If you look at CITES or specifically their search page CITES SEARCH you can see what they are considering the current names for species, and what is generally accepted as a close enough. As Mark Stadler (I am assuming that is who you meant as Marc) the oophaga are legal in Maine. Its all in what you call them.

AH hah, I was wondering what you meant by "they are listed in the top of that link" I guess I should have looked closer at the updated IFW website.
thanks for clarifying about IFW using their info from CITES, its been awhile since I was on there and never realized the new taxons aren’t used in CITES. I’d still like IFW to add Allobates, Cryptophyllobates, and especially Epipedobates. there’s 9 species in those three genii that I can count that are in the US hobby.
if there’s something I can do for a possible next time around amendment to the USL, let me know.

This list is official and legal NOW. As of Monday July 13 Deputy Commissioner Paul Jacques signed this into rule within the IFW.

We were informed of this and where told that the official list should be updated on their website by or on Friday July 17th.

They WILL BE ALLOWED at the upcoming show, we did all of this so that we could make sure we had it at this show.

As a teaser we have already arranged a few people who are coming specifically with some of these animals, a Dart Frog breeder, a Cham breeder and possible a frilled dragon breeder. I am sure there will be others there too, I just know that these animals will be there!!!

This is great news!!! I was looking into the laws and comparing them to places like NH and MA, why is Maine so strict on their indigenous species? It seems weird we don't allow garter snakes to captive in Maine when they are so common and such popular pets in so many other states. Even things like Painted Turtles and Spring Peepers. These are things that I remember catching all the time as a kid and keeping as pets (Not like you keep up with the laws when your under 10 years old) and it seemed like common place. My dad was a huge environmentalist, he was in the peace core, studied all sorts of reptiles/amphibians and other mammals in Thailand, and I know he would always tell me stories of how he caught these things growing up in Maine. So naturally as I was growing up we were always catching different snakes and frogs and stuff and keeping them for a while. Usually it was only for a few weeks during the summer, watch them eat and grow and then release them back into the wild. Which seems to be what a lot of people do growing up. But I see Garter snakes and Painted Turtles as common pets in NH, MA, and lots of surrounding states and Maine's laws are so much different. I am glad to see this site has gotten more things added to the list. The more the better. I just found a lot of the stuff surprising.
