YIKES! Nice bite!

Can you confirm if this is an actual water snake or not? I have different pictures and can zoom up for you if that'll help.

The picture (link below) was taken in T1-R8, Millinocket Lake, ME According to Maine Amphibians and Reptiles book, one was spotted East of our area prior to 1999, but from what I can tell, the sighting was not comfirmed via specimen or photo.

I hope you can help.

Lori-Ann,

It might be one, but that picture is just to far away to be sure.

Bob.

As a resident of Millinocket for 28 years, I feel confident saying there are no water snakes this far north. The markings on the snake would lead me to believe it's a maritime garter snake, which is very common around here.

Thanks for the replies. ;)

I have another picture of that snaked zoomed in more. At first, I thought it was a garter snake, too, but upon further research, I didn't think so, but still wasn't sure.

There is another camp 1/4 mile from us who borrowed my book a few years ago and said they confirmed that the snakes lingering around their dock were water snakes. Recently, while over there, I saw garter snakes, but they insist they know what those look like. So when I saw this snake swimming across our cove, and had a short stubby tail, it made me wonder.

You can see the zoomed in photo by going to this link. http://www.damcamp.com/Photos/SnakeInWaterZoomed.jpg

Thanks a bunch,
Lori-Ann Willey
